Amanda Hicks selected for CSC High Plains Festival

2011 Jan 26

Amanda Hicks of Valentine High School has been selected to participate in the 39th annual Chadron State College High Plains Band and Choir Festival on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 7-8.

Each of the 232 students was selected for one of the event's four groups by submitting audition tapes last fall. The groups are honor band, honor choir, girls' choir and festival band. Hicks was selected to sing alto two in the honor choir.

During the event's second day, the groups will perform a concert at 5 p.m. in Memorial Hall. It is open to the public free of charge.

Dr. John Wacker, chairman of the music department at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., will join CSC faculty members in leading the groups. Wacker conducts Western State's symphony band and serves as a trumpet professor. He will lead the honor band. From CSC, Dr. Adam Lambert will conduct the festival band, Dr. Joel Schreuder the honor choir and Dr. Una Taylor the girls' choir.

Organizers say the event provides an opportunity for high school students to work with talented peers and gain teaching and guidance from college professors.
