Derek Phelps named student director of CSC play

2016 Feb 12

Derek Phelps of Sidney, NE, has been named the student director of Chadron State College's play in late February.

Stoppard's play is an alternative spin to Shakespeare's classic "Hamlet." The theatrical comedy explores themes of self-identity and life, presented through the perspectives of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in "Hamlet."

According to Roger Mays, visual and performing arts professor, a student led production is not common, even at Chadron State College. In order to qualify, a student not only has to complete a 10 minute play both for beginning and advanced directing, but he or she must demonstrate consistently excellent work, significant experience in production, and exceptional commitment to the craft and the program.

Phelps has played roles in previous CSC productions such as "Big River" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." See the full story here.
