Robert Olsen among CSC Scholastic Contest medal winners

2011 Apr 3

Robert Olsen (gold in Animal Science) was among the medalists at the 51st Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday, April 1.

Olsen, a student at Banner County High School, was one of the 1,457 entries in the contest, which featured 47 exams on CSC's campus.

Each year, the Scholastic Contest attracts the region's brightest high school students. The seniors who win gold qualify for CSC's Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for the next academic year.

The top schools in three of the contest's five divisions this year had a familiar ring to them.

Rapid City Stevens claimed its fourth win in a row in Division I, joining Alliance in Division II and Crawford in Division IV as repeat champions. Another Rapid City school, St. Thomas More, earned the top spot in Division III for the first time since 2006, while Rock County of Bassett earned its first championship ever for besting the competition in Division V.

Stevens, a perennial title holder which has claimed the first-place plaque in seven of the past eight contests, soared with 18 medal winners. Stevens, along with Alliance and Gering, finished with five golds. Alliance and Chadron tied for second in the medal count with 11 each.

The CSC scholastic contest, which began in 1961, is believed to be the oldest and largest of its kind in the High Plains region. This year's number of students is the largest on record since 2005.
